WHY THE DESIGN OF THE END JOINTS
IS SO IMPORTANT

A typical laminated floor has around 2,000 joints and each end joint is a weak spot, affecting the capacity to resist the stress related to thousands of forklift passages

No hook joints are used in a PROLAM floor

The figure below shows the number of cycles that 1 5/16" laminated floor fabricated with different types of joints have sustained under a 16 000 pound forklift.

The test obviously shows that the weakest joint design is the hook joint! PROLAM’s ZigZag joints,
which have been used since 2000, double the stress resistance of the floor.

PROLAM is continuously improving and innovating,
the finger joint is the latest revolution!

In the last two years, PROLAM has invested time and effort in developing
the use of the top end joint shape: the finger joint.

The finger joint is the best because it is a structural joint that is as strong as the wood itself (70 % to 80%). Tests have proven that if a floor used 100% finger joints, the floor would be 5 to 6 times more fatigue resistant than one featuring hook joints. Over the upcoming years, PROLAM will invest time, money, and energy into putting more and more finger joints in its laminated floors.

Currently, 7% to 14% of PROLAM joints are finger joints. They are located where the floor needs them the most: on the edge of the board where the ship laps are located. All the other joints have the ZigZag shape.

In addition to the increase in the floor’s fatigue resistance, PROLAM’s ZigZag
and finger joints reduce water penetration into the joints, protecting cargo from moisture.
